Redmond United Methodist Church grabbed into the web of Gulen cult
Pacifica Institute and Redmond United Methodist come together for Interfaith dinner
A group of about 130 people gathered at Redmond United Methodist Church (RUMC) for dinner on Sunday evening.
But rather than a room full of Christians, as the venue may imply, the dinner was the Interfaith Friendship Iftar Dinner and contained a mix of members of the RUMC as well as members of the Pacifica Institute (PI). The latter is a nonprofit organization with Turkish American Muslims.
Redmond United Methodist Church pastor Lara Bolger

Tezcan Inanlar, northwest director of PI in Bellevue, said the point of the dinner was to have an interfaith dialogue that could lead to cross-cultural understanding. The theme of Sunday's dinner was "Love your neighbor."
Inanlar said this is the second time they have held an interfaith dinner with RUMC. The first partnership between the institute and church was about a year ago when they hosted a dinner at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center.
RUMC pastor Lara Bolger said her church was happy to host the Iftar dinner this year and to provide a space for interfaith dialogue and learning from each other over a shared meal. She said the goal of the dinner is to build friendships and create community.
"As a church, we value community partnerships and working together to create a more just, compassionate and peaceful society," she said. "In order to do that we must be intentional about building relationships, especially with people of different faith traditions with whom we may have little connection in our daily lives."
The dinner was scheduled about three months prior to the Orlando shootings that occurred on Sunday morning, Inanlar said, and in light of the events, they chose to keep the program for their dinner as planned as the topics of discussion were still relevant. He added that they also realized how important the decision to even hold the dinner in the first place was and how much people needed it.
"Love is a very powerful tool (against hate)," Inanlar said.
Bolger agreed, saying it was especially poignant for the two groups to do something together.
"Together, we acknowledged our grief, shared a time of silence for the victims and talked about love and service inspired by the Islamic teacher and preacher Fethullah Gulen," she said. "It was a very meaningful night."
At the dinner, both Inanlar and Bolger spoke, sharing their respective religions' perspective.
Inanlar said dinner was served at 9:07 p.m., when Muslims were able to break from fasting all day in observing Ramadan. He said they also discussed the importance of fasting with their Christian counterparts.
Attendees also watched "Love is a Verb," a film about taking action, serving, caring for and helping others in need.
In addition, First District Congresswoman Suzan DelBene attended the event, commending PI for its work in promoting interfaith dialogue and cross-cultural ties. DelBene also presented PI with a certificate of Congressional Record, which included her address to Congress.
"(PI's) efforts have helped remove barriers, building confidence and trust to create a peaceful society through newfound friendships," the certificate reads. "Through their vision of promoting social justice through shared networks, Pacifica Institute has provided my district with the opportunity to foster mutual appreciate in a respectful environment."

Pacifica Institute Gulen Lobbying takes Idaho lawmakers to Turkey
Over the course of 2011, 13 Idaho legislators toured Turkey.
The lawmakers had to pay their own way halfway across the globe, but once they got to Turkey, their hotels, meals and travels were bankrolled by the Pacifica Institute, a group of Turkish-Americans. The group said its mission was “to develop social capital — 'the creation and extension of positive connections within and between disparate social networks.”
During the trip, the lawmakers toured Turkish schools and universities. Senate President Brent Hill, R-Rexburg, said the tour provided lawmakers a chance to meet with political, education and business leaders.
Why are those trips of interest, five years after the fact? The Pacifica Institute is aligned with Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen. And Gulen figures prominently in the fallout from Friday’s failed military coup in Turkey — although Gulen’s role in the coup is open to debate. Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan has blamed Gulen with orchestrating the attempted coup. Gulen has denied any involvement, and has accused Erdogan of staging the coup, NBC News reported Monday.
Also of note, in any discussion of Gulen and K-12 policy, is his role in the charter schools movement. As the Washington Post reported Saturday, Gulen has ties to 160 charter schools across the nation — which would constitute one of the nation’s largest charter school networks.
I wrote about the legislators’ trips to Turkey at the time, in my former life as an Idaho Statesman editorial writer and columnist. I hadn’t given those columns much thought until the weekend, when a fellow reporter reminded me of the Idaho-Gulen connection.
So, which legislators took the Pacifica Institute up on its invite?
The list includes five current legislators, in addition to Hill: outgoing Sen. Curt McKenzie, R-Nampa, now a candidate for state Supreme Court; Sen. Lee Heider, R-Twin Falls; Sen. Michelle Stennett, D-Ketchum; Rep. John Rusche, D-Lewiston; and outgoing Rep. Donna Pence, D-Gooding.
The list also includes seven former lawmakers: Sens. John McGee, R-Caldwell, Joe Stegner, R-Lewiston; John Tippetts, R-Montpelier, Diane Bilyeu, D-Pocatello; and Edgar Malepeai, D-Pocatello; and Reps. Janice McGeachin, R-Idaho Falls; and Dennis Lake, R-Blackfoot.

Gulen Movement Political Bribes and Manipulations of Washington
More info about Hillary and Bill Clinton's connections to the Gulen Movement
In addition to muddying that complex geopolitical dynamic, a 2009 email recently released by Judicial Watch provides yet another example of access being provided to a Clinton campaign and Clinton Foundation donor.
In the April 1, 2009 message, a Gulen follower named Gokhan Ozkok asked Clinton deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin for help in connecting one of his allies to President Obama.
Ozkok is founding board member of the Turkish Cultural Center and part of a network of businesses and non-profits affiliated with the Gulen movement, also known as Hizmet.

The connections between the Gulen movement and Clinton are not the first to be revealed. They also add to questions about what it is the Gulenists want from Clinton and whether the Democrat has rewarded their financial support with favors.
Last year The Daily Caller reported that numerous Gulen followers have donated to Clinton’s various political campaigns and to her family charity. One Gulen movement leader, Recep Ozkan, donated between $500,000 and $1 million to the Clinton Foundation.
As senator from New York, Clinton gave a keynote address at the Turkish Cultural Center’s annual banquet.
The email to Abedin, which is the first piece of communication showing that a Gulen follower had direct access to Clinton’s staff, sought a favor.
“Please tell Madam Secretary that it would be great if President Obama can include a 15 minutes [sic] meeting with Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary-General of the Organization of of [sic] the Islamic Conference (OIC), in his trip to Turkey,” wrote Ozkok.
